Spenger’s historic fish restaurant (The same family had owned the Seafood Grotto since it opened in 1890) has been spruced up and revitalized by McCormick & Schmick, a Portland-based company that also owns McCormick and Kuleto’s in Ghirardelli Square.

They have restored the teak walls salvaged from ships and the other ship paraphernalia, including photos, oil paintings, riggings, wheels and anchors.

There’s a fish market selling clam chowder (New England and Manhattan) and the cheapest sandwiches on the street, as well as fresh fish and shellfish.

“You can have a good fish dinner, excellent drinks, and a lot of fun at this Berkeley institution.” - San Francisco Examiner
